1 rug or 2 rugs for this room, and what color(s)?

My living room is your basic rectangle that is doing double-duty with an L-shaped sectional & coffee table on one end and a desk/chair on the other. The couch is grey, the furniture is dark brown, and the curtains and accent pillows are a bright green (think lime, apple, spring -- as opposed to sage, forest, kelly).

Right now we have one 8x10 rag rug that covers the span perfectly, reaching from underneath the edges of the sectional to the outer edge of the desk. However, it turns out that we hate the rug. (To be more precise, our cats love the rug dearly, and are intent on pulling it apart rag by rag.) The rug basically looks like this, but the bright color is only a border and the inside is light grey with specks of color: http://plushrugs.com/loloi/anzio/ao-01/

So we are searching for a new rug, and I have questions:

1) Should we get another 8x10 to cover the same area? If so, what color(s)? I think a huge rug in that bright color would overwhelm the space, but I don't want a boring rug.

OR

2) Should we get two 5x8 rugs -- one for the space in the middle of the sectional's L (where the coffee table goes) and another for the space under the desk/chair? And if so, could we get away with 2 rugs in different colors -- like a bright green rug for the couch space and a grey rug for the desk space? Should the rugs meet up so there's no floor showing between them, or should we leave a 3-6" gap between?

We all know that the right rug can really tie the room together, which is why I'm always so hesitant when it comes to buying them. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd use 2 rugs. What about something like this for the sectional? http://www.cb2.com/rx-wool-dhurrie-rug/f10198
Then you could do a bright green one for the desk space - like this? http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/nuLOOM-Handmade-Luna-Moroccan-Trellis-Rug-5-x-8/6660487/product.html?refccid=OAI2XIL3KL2ZGECEZHGKCNGCOM&searchidx=1
