humidifier - anyone have the baby bargains book handy?

I have an old version and am wondering if Baby Bargains has a recommended cool mist humidifier in their latest edition?

Probably not, since the pediatrician recommendations these days are not to use a humidifier at all.

Cite? The American Academy of Pediatrics still recommends use of a cool air humidifier for coughs and colds.

10th edition (not sure if it's the most current, it's on loan from a friend who had a baby last year)

good - Crane EE-5301 ($40-50) (looks like a tear drop). They also mention the animal shapes made by Crane, they are basically the same model, but are smaller and only hold 1 gallon of water.

best - Air-O-Swiss 7135 Ultrasonic Humidifier ($180) or the Air-O-Swiss 7147 - same features/price as the 7135, but more compact in size.

Let me know if you want any additional info, descriptions would probably be easy to find on Amazon.

FWIW - we have the Crane pig

I'm expecting #3, so plenty of experience in the last 4 years with humidifiers. The Crane ones that look like animals are the best I've found. There's no filter, which is great because finding the right filter is nearly impossible, and they're easy to clean. The directions are to empty the water once a day and sterilize once a week (which is great because some actually suggest daily sterilization - as if anyone has that kind of time). No idea what Baby Bargains says, but there's my 2 cents.

This was my first hit.

Also, humidifiers are not recommended by pulmonologists, they may be a little ahead of the regular old pediatricians since this is more their specialty.

How do you sterilize these humidifers?

As of July 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics is still promoting them:

Crane has been mentioned already. Just wanted to say that I find the animal ones to break really easy. I went through four penguins. Then I switched to the crane year drop. Really like it and that you don't need a filter.

Thanks everyone, particularly 11:23! We have the Crane elephant for #1 and it has served us well. We find it useful during periods of illness, regardless of whatever the AAP or whoever else might say. AAP also says no screen time before age 2, right? So, yea....
