| Thank you to the PPs who explained the purpose of the test and that it’s nothing to stress over. We were surprised to hear of a test at a welcome party. But as other PPs have said, maybe preparing for BASIS involves assuming there’s a method to the madness and realizing that things happen differently there than at “normal” schools. We will come for the ice cream and the social opportunity! |
| There’s nothing weird or strange about a school offering a very short test to new students to learn information relevant to classroom placement and overall preparation. |
+1. It’s not a bad idea— BASIS is accepting students from all over, so it’s good that they know what the incoming classes’ knowledge base is like so that they can prepare ahead of time. But make no mistake— BASIS is a test heavy school. They are constantly giving the kids tests and assessments so that they can monitor how this school is doing in relation to the overall BASIS network. |
| I think having a test to improve the experience is a wonderful idea. It was just not explained at all and also scheduled to happen during the very first event alongside ice cream. So it just seemed unusual in that regard. I think having the test makes a lot of sense and folks headed to BASIS are well aware of the focus on testing. |
Then you didn't attend the Basis in-person family orientation sessions where they explained this. And you ignored the multiple references to it in the multiple emails leading up to enrollment (paste from one below). Maybe spend less time on DCUM and more time on emails pertaining to your kid's education? "Save the date now – Monday, June 27, we will have an "ice cream social" for fully enrolled families, this will be a chance to meet and great, as well as do some readiness testing 😊 – more info to come to fully enrolled families once we get through the enrollment deadline weekend." |
| Students who got in off the waitlist didn’t have the opportunity to attend the in-person orientation. |
I looked in my emails; every email reference to the Ice Cream Social makes reference to "and testing". Some even append a smiley face to that. I guess it is possible people who got in off WL didn't receive an email. It is also irrelevant whether they know there is a test since they tell you NOT to prep for. They won't tell you how you did on it (even if you ask). They are seeking a baseline for arranging classes. If the Basis-bashers have hit the bottom of the barrel for material such that expressing faux shock and outrage about intake testing is the best they have, by all means please proceed. |
| Fwiw: At Latin’s meet and greet for newly-admitted families they mentioned that incoming students would get a short reading assessment over the summer, so the concept is not unique to Basis! |
Do you have a spouse that handles caring about your kid's education? Because if your kid is going there, you have paid ZERO attention to all of the emails you've received and didn't attend the in-person orientation. This has been mentioned repeatedly. |
Just searched my BASIS emails. The only reference to an ice cream social that I have received is this: There is also the “ice cream social” on the 27th of June, and we hope to see you and your student there! Details about the event will be forthcoming very soon! So we had no idea it was accompanied by a test. |
We got off the waitlist just a few weeks ago, did not have the opportunity to go to the orientation because of that, and have not received any emails that reference the test. Good to know the incoming parents are assholes, though. |
Assessments at Latin!!! I'm shocked!!! |
You still have time to leave and go to your IB, PP. |
+1. Do it now. It will be better than having to do it in the middle of the year. |
|
Yes, please leave so you can open up a WL spot.
