| Our 10th anniversary is coming up in a couple weeks. Tried to get a reservation at Volt but it only has late times available. Other places we're considering: Mintwood Place, Blue Duck Tavern, Central, The Source. Any others we should consider? Prefer DC or MoCo. |
OP here -- I guess I should have stated that I'm looking for feedback on the ones I mentioned. |
| Don't know all of the places but I would say Central not really appropriate for an anniversary. It is well past its prime and has always been more casual (though not cheap). Blue Duck Tavern would work and have not been to the other two. |
| Mintwood can be delicious but does not have the "celebration" fancy dinner vibe. I'd vote for someplace like Komi before Mintwood. |
| If you can stretch to Old Town for a special occasion, I'd vote for Restaurant Eve (tasting room, preferably, or bistro if you're not looking for the tasting price point) |
| I hear good things about Iron Gate but haven't tried it yet myself... |
Agree with Komi over Mintwood. Mintwood is incredibly over rated in my opinion. I haven't been to Restaurant Eve in a couple of years, but it was pretty boring when I went. Rose's Luxury is supposed to be good, but haven't been so don't know the vibe. |
| I did a celebration dinner at Blue Duck Tavern and wasn't blown away. Didn't feel that special. Source is good but also might not feel that special. Komi would be a great place to go, but you might have trouble getting a reservation only a couple weeks out. I did a celebration dinner at Marcel's and had a fabulous meal and service was impeccable. |
| Central is more if a regular Saturday night place. |
|
I like Mintwood, but I understand it's a bit of an upscale hipster bistro vibe so maybe that's not what you want. I don't think it's really fair to compare Mintwood with Komi given the price disparity.
I like Blue Duck a lot. Iron Gate is very good too. I would skip Restaurant Eve. Roses Luxury is fantastic but no reservations so that would make it hard, and it's somewhat casual for an event dinner. |
| City Zen - get there before Chef departs. |
|
As others have noted, all the places you mention are in a different class from Volt. Source might be the closest. For something on par with Volt, CityZen is the cream of the crop and in my opinion, better than Volt. Chef Ziebold is there till beginning of December I think when they are closing, so if you can get a reservation, he's still there.
Another favorite of mine is the chef's table at Sushi Taro. Some of the dishes served there are amazing in their creativity and the variety and quality of the fish is fantastic. One of the items we were served last time there was a "watermelon slice" made of mentaiko which is a type of fish egg. The seclusion of the chef's counter area would also be nice for an anniversary celebration. |
| OP here, ended up taking the later reservation at Volt. Thanks for the feedback. |
