It seems that some HGCs give more ES to students on their report cards while others are pretty stingy about giving ES. How does it play out for MS Magnet admissions? All things being equal doesn't having more ESs on the report card make the selection committee notice the candidate?
The HGC my child attends is the opposite- to receive an ES you have to do work that is ES level of two grades ahead rather than ES level for the grade you are in. In fact, in 4th grade last year the teacher said there would not be any ESs.
same here - few ESs
yep, few ES grades here. Teacher said at back to school that there wouldn't be any and to not expect them.
This doesn't make sense to me. If you are producing work 1 year above grade level, aren't you "exceeding" standards?
It's one of those perpetual conundrums of the MontCo report card system - HGC or no. If your child is advanced, they are graded at the standard of the advanced level. So if your child is reading one year above grade level, and doing as a P student would at that level, then they receive a P, not an ES for exceeding their own grade level standards.
HGC teacher last year said they are graded in comparison to peers in the class. DS was assessed at a "Z" level in reading. Never got an ES. That's beyond 1 grade above.
At the beginning of 4th grade every single student in my child's HGC class was at Z. |
