help me understand ovulation and periods

Anonymous
i've been tracking my cycle's length for some time, but only ovulation for a couple months. my cycle is always between 28 and 30 days. the last two months i've ovulated on day 20 and day 21. according to this chart here http://www.countdowntopregnancy.com/tools/implantation_calculator.php and also everywhere else i've read, implantation usually occurs around day 9 post ovulation but can take even longer. so does that mean that on the months when my period came on day 29, by body just never gave that egg that got released on day 21 a chance to implant?

today is day 29 and i ovulated on day 21. since it's the day before my expected period, first response (which was negative this morning) is supposed to be over 99% accurate. but then again, it's only 8 days post ovulation, so it's possible the egg just hasn't implanted yet... what are the chances i'm pregnant?

Likely zero.

If you have a 28-30 day cycle and you are not O'ing until CD 20-21, that means your luteal phase (LP) is only 8-9 days, which is very short ("normal" is 14 days, and generally 12-15 days is considered optimum for fertility).

How are you tracking O? Are you charting your temperature? Using OPKs?

I would suggest using an OPK to test rather than using temp or cm. You may be confused as to when ovulation is occurring.

The egg needs to be fertilized in order to be implanted. So it simply means it was not fertilized.
If you are correct about your ovulation dates you cound have a short luteal phase though. Talk to your doctor.
Good luck.

thanks for the responses, ladies.

using those wondfo LH hormone testing strips. thought i'd add temping next month if it doesn't take this month.

at the preconception check-up, the midwife said come back in 6 months if you've been tracking your cycle and still not pregnant.

I think the Luteal phase is the most 'constant' of the two, and almost always 14 days. All the variation in cycle length usually comes from how long it takes to ovulate. Maybe you are ovulating earlier than you think.

Use the smiley face clearblue ovulation tests. Your luteal phase (time from ovulation to period) would be really short in the timing you're describing, which would make pregnancy difficult.

More info here:

FWIW my pregnancies occurred when I ovulated (based on that smiley face test) around day 17-18 of a 32-33 day cycle.

Never mind, just saw it can vary but it's more stable from cycle to cycle.

First PP from above.

The advice you got seems pretty spot on. If you are less than 35-ish, I think 6 months of really *trying* (temping, charting, getting great timing, etc.) is a standard bar for seeking medical intervention. Make sure that your timing is excellent each month.

I still say your LP sounds short - you can do a few things (B Complex, etc. - Google can help you) that may help lengthen it. Once you combine efforts (temping, using OPKs, tracking CM, etc.) you may also realize that your timing was off.

Good luck!!

yes, exactly. You can't assume a 14-day LP, but you can assume that YOUR LP is roughly the same number of days each month. The length of your LP is more predictable than your O day.

Sounds like a luteal phase defect. I have this. It makes getting pregnant more difficult.

I had success with B6 and accupuncture the last time I tried to get pregnant. This time I'm just trying the B6 and haven't seen any improvement in 3 cycles.
