kids table/desk

I need some ideas on a kid's desk/table. Before kids, a table is a table. It's versatile. The dinner table is your only table. But, now I don't want to use the dinner table for anything other than eating. Anyways, my kid is 5. What kind of table/desk do you recommend?
Something simple that he can grow with. I don't want to be buying tables every few years.
Maybe parents with older kids have good ideas. Do E.S school kids like to sit on their own doing homework on their own. Or do you find yourself needing to sit with the child at the table to do the work.

I bought an inexpensive table and chair at ikea when daughter was about 5. She does her homework now that she is 10 at the table, which is now in the finished attic.

We bought a beautiful desk from land of nod. It's held up very well and didn't have that awful chemical smell that others have complained about.
