| Has anyone seen this flyer? I'm not pro-Bowsser, but this flyer makes me uncomfortable for some reason. It seems kind of racist or something. Thoughts? |
|
Can you explain what about it you think is racist "or something"?
|
Not OP, but it has a person of black/brown coloring, so it must be racists.
|
|
I'm not sure why it makes me uncomfortable. Obviously if Bowser wasn't black, the attempt to link her image to "Scandal" wouldn't work. But that alone isn't necessarily racist, it's just a fact that she's black and Kerry Washington is black. Is it clever? Is it dodgy? I can't decide.
That's why I posted. I'm curious to hear how others reacted to this. |
| I saw it. I'm an AA woman. I thought it was great. Loved it. Voting for Catania. |
| If the shoe fits. Between the shadow campaign and park southern, I am not giving this "ethics" candidate a pass. |
But at least Bowser can claim with justification to be the "substance free" candidate! |
| saw it. It's a blatant trademark infringement. while I don't disagree with the issue around park southern the mailer takes it a bit too far. Could backfire on him. |
| Here's a link to a photo of the mailer https://twitter.com/willsommer/media from WCP loose lips columnist will sommer. Tommy Wells also blasted mailer in his twitter feed. |
If you can trademark the word "scandal" used in the context of American politics, you are truly gifted. |
They used the show logo on the mailer. Yep, that's a violation and they could be sued by the production company. Will they be sued? No, probably not. Does it push the limit of good taste -- well I guess we'll see what the voters think. |
|
To be precise, Tommy Wells retweeted message from Dave Stroup, former digital communications manager at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, saying that he, Dave Stroup, is not impressed by it (meaning the mailer).
|
I think it would work for any candidate currently embroiled in scandals. It might not be 100% as visually compelling, but the big red letters are enough to make the ad work, even on a white male. |
| What the hell does he have to lose? Nothing. |
|
I think it's going to backfire. (I will never vote for Bowser btw and will probably vote for Catania.) But here's the thing -- people love Kerry Washington and somehow this equates Bowser with Washington so it feels like a) an attack on the much-beloved Washington and/or b) drawing attention to Bowser as comparable black woman leader and attacking her for fitting into that category.
I know there are posters who will call me crazy for this but that's how it felt to me. Instead of just attacking Bowser's choices, it categorizes her as a black female who should be attacked for her choices. |
