do carpet stores still give away remnants?

Anonymous
I'm looking for a narrow piece for a mudroom, so thinking a remnant (could be thrown away after winter). Or if anyone knows a store/mail order with narrow rugs (like 4x1 feet), I'd appreciate knowing.

Home Depot has carpet on rolls that you can buy by the yard. They won't sell it to you cut to one foot wide but you could easily just take a carpet knife and do it yourself.

you are really looking for a 12" wide piece of carpet?

My reaction to this posting is "get a life!" Why do you care enough to post this question?

Never heard of them giving them away. You can buy them, and I have. They are not cheap, like a couple hundred with the edges bound with matching tape/fabric. I find it's a pretty cost effective way to get a decent area rug.

Why not just buy a doormat?

Looked for doormats 4x1 and didn't find any. Not sure it makes sense as a set of dimensions for a doormat.

How about some sort of carpet runner? But the PP has a point - it's kind of an odd size of floor to carpet. For a mudroom, why not just leave the floor bare?

I basically want to have a place to put muddy shoes, deposit shoes when we take them off upon entering the house.

OP, I would also check out the *rugs* that cooks use in front of stoves. They are padded and have the non slip surface underneath.
