Elementary school tutor

My 2nd grader needs a bit of help, so I called tutors in our area (Rockville)and got quotes for $40 & $50/hr. Does this seem high? How much do you pay?

how much help are you looking for? RM has a tutoring club - GenerationZ, free of charge, once a week I think. You may want to check it out.

Is this for math? If OP's kid is in 2nd grade, then DC is doing 2.0 math. I'm not sure a HSer can help with 2.0 math. Some parents seem to be having a hard time helping their kids with 2.0 math. A HSer may be better at 2.0 math than a parent, but not sure they would be the best person to help with 2.0 math. Maybe ask an MCPS teacher. I think some teachers do tutor outside of school.

I'm PP who stated to get an MCPS teacher. If you can't find one, maybe you could try a tutoring center, like Kumon or whatever. I don't know if they could help with 2.0 math or not but seems some kids around here go there.

There are also some online sites that may help. On the MCPS website, under the curriculum tab, there are some links to websites for kids to do some exercises online.

No this does not seem high. The price depends on teh experience of the person. Are they teachers?

We have had a math tutor for my MCPS fifth grader for years. She's a former DCPS teacher and we pay her $50 an hour.

Somerset parent here. We have tutors at our school - mostly current and former Georgetown professors. Typical hourly rate - $450 and up. Most of my friends use them for English, science and math three afternoons a week. Much better for my DD than some grimy Kumon class.

How dumb do you have to be as parents that you can not tutor your own kid in math? $50-80/hr to teach a 7-8yr old? Wow!

I don't have a tutor for my kids. I do help them myself.

BUT, I can see how some parents would rather use tutors because of either limited time (they work), or because the dynamic between parent/child is different than tutor/child. Sometimes, it's easier and better for the kid (and parent) if they are taught by someone other than a parent. Some adults are not good at explaining things, like math concepts, to a young child. Sometimes I find myself looking for simpler words and ways to explain things to my 6 or 9 yr old. It's not always easy because I am not used to it. I suspect tutors that have experience with ES kids are more used to explaining things to young kids.
