empanadas

This question is two-fold!

1. Where is there a great place to get empanadas in Northern Virginia? I have been having a hankering for them, and don't know how to make them. Which brings me to my next question...

2. Tell me your amazing empanada recipe. Preferably ground beef, but anything will do!

What a coincidence. I prepared 40 (20 meat/20 tuna) empanadas yesterday.
The only place I know where to buy them is in Rockville, MD.

There's a coffee shop/gelato place called ESP on King Street in Old Town, and according to their sign, they sell Julia's Empanadas. I've never been in there, but I drive past it all the time and keep meaning to stop in; I love the Julia's in downtown DC.

Lamb & Goats Cheese Empanadas
This recipe makes about three to four dozen empanadas and is inspired by some friends who make wine down in Argentina. Since we have great lamb and goat’s cheese in our own area, I thought it was a natural.

Empanada Filling
Finely Diced Lamb
Green Onions, thinly Sliced
Goats Cheese
Roma Tomatoes, finely diced,
Nicoise Olives, pitted & coarsely chopped, Lime juice
Method
1 1?2 pounds 0ne bunch 6 oz
6 each
1/2 cup
2 each, or to taste
In a medium sauté pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the lamb and cook until browned. Remove from heat and stir in the green onion, goats cheese, tomato and olives. Stir to blend. Squeeze lime juice over top & salt and pepper to taste. Let cool.

Empanada Dough
All Purpose Flour Corn Meal
Salt 2 tsp Unsalted Butter Lard
Large Egg Cold Water
Egg yolk for washing Method
3 1?2 cups
1?2 cup
1 tsp
l0 tablespoon 4 tablespoons 2 each
4 tablespoons 2 each

Mix flour s and shortening in mixer, or by hand. Add salt, egg & cold water. Kneed dough until good consistency then let dough rest for at least one hour. Cut out circles and fill with filling into moon shapes, or use tart shells.
They cook at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes.
Serve with Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

These are great! The lamb is just so much better vs beef.

Have you tried to saltenas? They are similar to empanadas with a soupy filling. You can get really good ones at Luzmillas in Falls Church, but I think they only sell them on weekends.

My ex girlfriend from Argentina made low sodium meat empanadas for me every time we hang out at her place in Vienna. Sad her mom didn't like me.

If you're ever at the Bethesda Farmers Market on Sundays check out Vera's. They have an incredible corn, heart of palm and gruyere cheese empanada!

Panas in Dupont Circle or Bethesda are delicious. Unfortunately not in Northern Virginia.
I have found good empanadas in Balduccis's (McLean).
If you are looking for Colombian empanadas, the best are in Gaithesburgh in a place called Jaymar.

I love Julia's Empanadas. They sell them at Boccato in Clarendon as well.

Not empanadas, but close, are pastys. The Pure Pasty shop in Vienna is heaven!

There is a place on Pickett Road in Fairfax City that sells them. I wanted to take them home and cook them for dinner so the lady who owns the place recommended that I buy saltenas instead and gave me instructions on how to cook them. She was very helpful. Sorry I can't remember the name of the place, but it is across Pickett Rd. from Lifetime Fitness.

Bread Bakery and Grill in Fairfax has awesome saltenas (beef & chicken) .

Don Churro cafe in Chantilly has them too, also good... but BBG is much cheaper.

I second Pure Pasty in Vienna -- really good.

Agree with the recommendation for Panas.

There is also a woman who sells Argentinean empanadas in a street market in Adams Morgan on the weekends (yum yum).

We had some delicious empanadas last night at La Malinche in Silver Spring.

I tried her empanadas, but didn't like them much.
