s/o Salmon

Anonymous
I have fresh salmon that I bought on Thurs. It got busy all weekend and it's still sitting in my fridge. I've never kept fresh salmon in the fridge for longer than 1 day, so I'm wondering if it's still good after 5 days?

I wouldn't eat that, either. I wouldn't eat fish that was older than 2-3 days...what's that adage about fish and houseguests?

My understanding is that unlike poultry and other meats, fish is frozen as soon as its caught because it spoils so easily. When we buy it at the grocery store in its thawed state, that means it has been frozen already and thawed. I would assume that means its fridge life is substantially shorter than chicken or beef or pork. Now if you bought it frozen and were letting it defrost in the fridge, maybe that's different?

When it doubt, throw it out.

I wouldn't keep it past 2 days. I always buy fresh fish the same day that I'm going to use it.

Turn it into gravelox in your freezer. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/homemade-gravlax/#axzz3G8omXYrT

How does it smell? If it smells okay - fresh, no sour smell, no ammonia smell, no strong fish odor (mild fish odor is okay) - it is okay to eat. If it has a strong odor, give it to the dog.

I wouldn't. And I am usually the one laughing at DCUMers who toss a gallon of milk because it sat on the table for ALL of breakfast.

Thanks all, I've decided to toss it on trash day.

All these threads about giving rotten food to dogs. Vet bills are expensive, and presumably you love your dog and don't want him to get sick or die. Just throw it out if you wouldn't eat it. Dogs are not indestructible. Sadly. I know from experience.

Me, too. I think I made serious fun of the OP of the last "OMG I left the milk out" thread. But you don't fuck around with fish.

I disagree. Depending on the source, it might be fine after 5 days. I would definitely do the smell test. You know when fish is not good. If it smells okay I would cook it (and I am pretty conservative about food safety).
