I dreamed that my child didn't get into any colleges and was stuck in our basement for life and this morning I encouraged him to apply to a ridiculously safe school. It was scary (although not quite as scary as the thought that after this year, providing my dream is not an omen, we won't see him anymore)

I had almost the same dream last year, seriously, and we pushed and pushed for him to have at least two safeties on his list. Fast forward, he's now very happy at an ivy. Relax -- as long as you have a good range of schools on the list, you should sleep better.

There are other options for your DC, but for some of us, it is our reality- or at least a real probability. Not all children mature at the same rate and not all children are capable of reaching relative independence.
