Just moved into a house that has a small garden of mostly tomatoes in the back yard and a small rose garden as well, but I've never gardened so I don't know what to do with the plants now that it's cold outside. Do I pull them up? Just trip them really far back? Help please!!
I'd pull out the tomatoes and trash them. They are annuals and will not survive the winter. Sometimes they can spread disease to the soil. Pull them up and throw them out. Regarding the roses - it may depend on the type. I will be cutting mine back in late winter.
Leave the roses alone until late Feb/early March, and then look up how to prune them. Leave the tomato plants alone until the frost kills them. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, and when it's supposed to freeze overnight, pick any remaining tomatoes. Make fried green tomatoes! When the tomato plants are dead, pull them up or cut off the stems and throw them out.
Ditto. Spend the cold winter days reading up on roses, then you'll know what to do by late winter.
