Magnetic bars for family command center

Anonymous
I posted earlier about wanting to create a family command center on the exterior of a pantry wall. DH doesn't want to drill into the cabinet, so Elfa and other drill systems are out. I played with some babyproofing magnets and realized magnets hung on the inside of the pantry wall will hold up magnets on the exterior pantry wall. I am thinking of getting a few magnet bars that can be fixed (via adhesive or drilling) on the inside of the pantry wall so I can then buy a magnetic calendar, magnetic mail holders, etc to hang on the exterior pantry wall. However, I'm having difficulty finding bar magnets that can hold this kind of weight. Searching "magnet bars" showed a Pottery Barn system but the magnets alone were $50-80. Would a chef's knife magnet work? Has anyone done something like this? Thanks.

Not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but would magnetic paint be an option? We have it in our kitchen by the desk/command center and it works well.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions. I think the IKEA magnet might work. Now I have to get to IKEA to see how weighty it is. 9:32, I didn't know such a paint existed. I doubt it would hold the heavy stuff, but perhaps it's an option for lighter items. Thanks for the ideas!

They also have magnetic boards at Ikea:

If the bar doesn't work.

I have this, but you have to drill holes in order to hang it.

Go on Pinterest and search "magnet wall." You can go to Home Depot or even better, a metal fabricator (there is one in falls church and they are super nice about this type of stuff) and get a piece of sheet metal. Because your magnets won't be hanging right in it, you can probably get away with using a bunch of that thick double-sided foam tape to hang it, if you get enough and it's heavy duty. That way you can (if I'm understanding your question) cover the whole door with magnet, or as much of it as you want, rather than just strips. It will not be expensive -- probably less than $50 for a piece custom cut to your door if you need no other cutouts. Good luck!
