Academic Camps - Any good ones out there?

Anonymous
I am just wondering if there are any good academic summer camps out there that others would recommend. My children are young and will enter 2nd and 4th in Sept. We have been thinking about mixing up what we do in the summers and throw in a camp that is more academic - probably not this summer though.

My daughter enjoyed Mathtree. I think there was the right combination of academic and fun stuff. (Especially important for girls to see math as something that you just do, regardless of gender.)

My son was recommended for 'summer school' before entering 4th grade - mostly for reading. We were able to have him attend the Sidwell Explorers and participate in Reading Skills, Book Club, and Map Skills... combining with soccer, cooking, floor hockey and other fun... made for a great summer. Younger child enjoyed doing workshops in Reading Skills for the enjoyment (rather than to play catchup). She loved adding the arts, sewing, and clay. This summer, they have added a new program in August for back to school... my son will be doing his math packet there rather than me fighting with him!

My daughter had a horrible experience with MathTree. If you choose their camp, I strongly recommend staying on top of the teacher At.The.Very.Beginning as it was our experience that the teachers told us *nothing* until the two-week session was over.

We are using and after camp day program called Tools for Success Tutoring. They offer organizational skills workshops and writing workshops in the late afternoons, as well as private tutoring. We were very pleased and impressed with them. Their website is www.toolsforsuccesstutoring.com. The number is 301 576-3762.

Tenley Circle Camp, located at Tenley Circle (Wisconsin Ave), offers education enrichment through language and culture. Campers go on weekly fieldtrips, exploring the city and also do fun things like art projects, music, and organized outdoor play, while using exploratory, project-based learning to do reading, writing and math. More information can be found at www.city-gate.org, there is a link to Tenley Circle Camps on the main page.

Really? I was planning to sign my child up for the multiplication session at MathTree this summer? Why was it so horrible? Did you daughter not have a good time? Did she learn much?

The teacher said that my daughter was too needy and required too much one-on-one time. The teacher decided that she would give me daughter worksheets and send her to a separate table to do the worksheets while she worked with the other students in the camp. This caused my daughter to be upset. I learned that my daughter was crying at camp from one of the other parents; the teacher never told me. My daughter had a miserable time and asked me to promise to never send her there again. This teacher seemed to be better with older kids (3rd graders) so you may have better luck. We were signed up for the camp in Arlington (at the Unitarian church location). I had wanted to send my daughter to two years of MathTree camp but after last summer, we will not be going back.

17:40 here whose daughter liked MathTree. Wow, your dd's experience sounds quite disturbing. Have you tried talking to the camp's owner? When I first looked into MathTree she was quite helpful in providing references. I would imagine that she would want to know that one of her teachers did this. I can understand you're not wanting to risk getting this teacher again.

I found a program in August - Kick Start to School in bethesda and dc - able to finish the dreaded math review packet with a 'tutor counselor' and not me having to force it over Labor Day weekend! my 4th grader is doing math and organization skills then a soccer clinic with a DC United player - a perfect mix! Offered by Sidwell
