Watch the labels! Earlier today this week I noticed new labels on the beef: "Butcher Shop USDA Graded". USDA graded what? So I called up a friend who would know. Giant is moving to SELECT grade beef and trying to do it under the radar.
Not surprised. They used to grind their own ground beef, but it's now coming to them pre-packaged. You can still get them to grind a chuck roast for you, but the packaged stuff is not ground that day for sure.
Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting and reminding me why while I usually order Peapod, I make a separate trip to WF for meat. Such a pain.

Yeah "USDA Graded" is suspect, since basically all beef sold in the US is USDA-graded.. but it may have a poor grade.
Safeway sells USDA prime (blue packaging). |
That's double sneaky because the new "Butcher Shop" labels are blue, too. Just got the grocery ads in the mail. If Shoppers is selling Select graded steak at $6.99 lb, what mystery grade is Giant's $5.99 lb NY Strip? |
Costco, baby.
unless you are raising and killing the cattle yourself then you really don't know wtf you're getting and never will. Let's not forget that the federal government is not particularly good at anything.
Giant can build fancy new stores but they still sell the SOS.
Americana Grocery has my favorite meat counter.
But the US government does enforce the grading system. Thank you OP for posting. I would not have caught this at Giant.
