Carnegie Mellon is obviously #1, after that?
Pitt Penn State University of Tennesse Penn State Virginia Tech West Virginia Others? |
What is your purpose here? Is there a reason to seek out this region? |
Vanderbilt is #1
|
I assume that that list is not meant to be in ranking order. |
Uh, Nashville is not in Appalachia! |
Uh, UT is not in Nashville!! |
Tennessee is in Knoxville. |
Vanderbilt is in Nashville, hence the correction. |
Sewanee |
Is the Univ of Penn in that area?? |
The University of Pennsylvania is in West Philadelphia, which, while it has its own issues, is definitely not in Appalachia. |
Here's a map for the geographically challenged:

Despite those who have called Pittsburgh the Paris of Appalachia, I wouldn't consider the area west of the Laurel highlands really to be part of it. |
I agree that painting that area with one broad brush is problematic. Why is the OP asking about colleges in Appalachia? Are you looking for a cultural experience for your DC? Are you hoping for a better price there (which I definitely would not count on)? What is your motive? |
Pittsburgh is definitely Appalachia and always has been capital of the region. Nashville is not. |
