Tips for night-time lighting? For feeding & diaper change without bright lights

Anonymous
Any suggestions? I heard about the Candela (electric candle), but it has gotten truly horrible reviews on Amazon for reliability. Baby will be with us in the bedroom for first few months, and I want to be able to nurse and change diapers without blinding hubby, baby, and me.

Is a regular nightlight enough?

I had the same concern but decided not to get something special for night. We leave baby's light off but turn on the hall light or a bathroom light. They are bright enough that we can see what we are doing, yet dark enough that baby does not have neon lights in his face.

Could you put a dimmer switch on the light you are using? That may work?

ambient light from another room is great. I also had a low-wattage bulb in a light with a super-dark lampshade in DC's room. That worked well for diaper changes. It might depend a lot on baby, too, my son never minded a little bit of light at all.

We just put a regular ol nightlight from Target in our room. It worked fine for the nighttime feedings, etc

I got one of those little clip on book lights (LED bulb) and clipped it to the side of the cosleeper. Very nice soft light, and only when needed (I have trouble sleeping when there's light from another room.)

I got one of the touch lamps that have several intensity levels from very dim to bright, so that I wouldn't have to make too much sound turning on the light and could adjust the brightness depending on what I was doing.

I haven't used it, but have heard good things about "black lights". Apparently it lights things enough that you can see, but your eyes don't adjust to it, so you can get back to sleep easier...

We actually used a small flashlight, although I wish we'd found one of the those clip on book lights!

Like a PP, I have also used a regular nightlight. It's provided more than enough light for night feedings, diaper changes, etc. We even use just that light for his bedtime routine - changing him into his pajama's and putting him into his crib for the evening.

I am using Candela Candeloos for all three kids (toddler + twins). The older set of lights were made by a different manufacturer, and are EXTREMELY unreliable. The newer set of lights are made by OXO and are MUCH better. They also sell spare parts on the Candela website: http://www.vesselinc.com/prod_light_candeloo.html
Remember, the rechargeable batteries only last about 18-24 months, so they will need to be replaced regularly. The lights are also cheaper on the Vessel website--$39 vs. $50.

We have the hands free mobile light from One Step Ahead. Surprisingly, it's really bright, but does the trick.
