Toys for a 3 m.o. boy?

Anonymous
we're first time parents of a 3 m.o. boy; planning on buying some new toys for our baby (he already has some, including a gym/playmat with some hanging toys, a huge mobile, etc.).
What toys would you recommend for our age (3-6 m.)? (our boy is very alert and playful).
What was your child's favorite toy at that age?
Thank you very much!

A ball.

One of those plastic, four key pianos to bang on.

Anything with music/noise. A train that goes round and round to music was a big hit with our DC, too.

But my son didn't get into these until closer to six months.

My son is 5 months and I just pulled out this package of blocks that I think are from Target. They are soft/squishy and squeek, he thinks they are great. ANd he likes to chew on them, good for teething. They are light enough he can pick them up on his own. We don't have many other toys, a playmat he loves the stuff that hangs down. Ours had this monkey that hung by his tail and it has been his favorate toy for a while, we take it everywhere. He also LOVES his angel dear lovey things

I know that it's tempting to want to buy toys b/c at 3 months, you're dying to see the baby interact with things, but I honestly think that babies at that age just aren't that into much besides chewing on things and swatting at the toys on their playmats. I always rolled my eyes when people suggested that I crumple up a piece of paper for my DD to play with, but in the end that was sort of the most exciting thing for her at 3-6 months. Once she starts sitting up and crawling, you'll have many more options. My advice is to save your $ now because down the road there will be a lot to buy!

Ditto PP on not overbuying. We had some things that made noise such as the Lamaze cube w/ a bell inside, egg shakers, maracas, etc. These were big hits as were anything silver/shiny. I gave (and still) give her little silver food prep bowls to play w/. From 3-6 months, the biggest activities were rolling, then sitting up. Closer to 6-8 months, she loved to take books down from her cubby and then put them back. Still a theme: putting things in a box, taking them out. Nesting cups, nesting boxes, and shape sorter all were great for this purpose.

And my DS (13mths) isn't into nesting anything, but loves things that roll or move (like cars or balls). My point being, that in a few more months you'll get an idea of what your baby actually likes and is engaged by, and then it is SO fun to buy toys. I remember buying alot of stuff in the earlier months and watching them go over like a lead balloon. I'd save your money and buy lots later on.

Exactly. Plus, you'll be so surprised how quickly they reach the next phase. So save your $$ and get creative - we found something as simple as a plastic spoon (easy to grip, no harm when put in mouth) entertained DC for a good 20 minutes - go figure. My travel size hand held mirror apparently was also very interesting to DC too - either that or he is going narcisstic
