When did you first put your baby in a restaurant highchair? DD is 6 months and sits in a highchair at home, and can sit up pretty well unassisted- although we still surround her with pillows because she does fall over sometimes. Do the chairs at restaurants offer enough support?
Probably closer to a year for us. No, those wooden ones (all we've used) don't offer any support at all.

We have an 8 month old who does fine in them. At 6 months he sat up unassisted, and we tried one of the high chairs at a restaurant. It was fine, but not great.
Also, if you have one of those shopping cart covers you can stick it in the high chair. The extra fabric helps offer some support, there are toys hanging from it to entertain baby, and baby puts that in his mouth rather than the nasty high chair.

We always stuff our coats or blankets behind our daughter in those high chairs- that always works great.
DS is 6 months and we use one of those shopping cart seat covers in the restaurant highchair. It pads him enough to keep him secure.
We started putting our baby in a restaurant high chair at 5 months and haven't had any problems.
Until she was big enough to fill it out on her own, I often stuck my diaper bag behind DD to help prop her up. Guess that says something about the size of my diaper bag. Ugh!
