If we're going to do CIO for my 5 mo old daughter, is it better to do it for both nighttime and naps at the same time or just focus on night and get her to sleep for naps in the usual way (nursing her to sleep in my case)?

| Buy a book by one of the "experts" and commit to a plan. |
| Agreed. Read a book or two, then choose a method you believe in. |

For a different point of view . . .
I hate all of the sleep books. I hold them in the same esteem as diet books. Especially the ones that act as though varying one iota from the plan throws everything off and forces you to start over from scratch. In my experience, naps and nighttime are totally different kinds of sleep and you don't have to cry it out for both. If you'd rather start with one or the other, there's no harm (at least there wasn't for me). |
Agree with PP - the books just got me stressed out. I started with nighttime at around that age (5 months), and did a slightly modified CIO. Still nursed to sleep for naps. Naps sorted themselves out when I went back to work at 6 months and someone else was in charge.

OP here. Thanks PPs. Agreed that the books have been stressful and confusing. Especially Weisbluth - can't figure out the action plan, it all seems so vague. I think we're going to work on nighttime first. We still have a couple more months till i go back to work so we have time to work on naps later. Thanks!

| Our ped said night first and naps will follow! Good luck. |
