cough turning into asthma-like symptoms -- anyone else have this?

Anonymous
So about two weeks ago I got a headcold that resulted in the usual few days of congestion and coughing. The cold is all better now, except I seem to have developed an asthma-like reaction (I don't have a history of asthma). I cough and then cannot catch my breath for maybe 15-30 seconds -- it feels like my through and lungs are blocked and I cannot get air. After a minute it passes and I'm okay, but it is scary. I went to the doctor today and got an albuteral inhaler and some antibiotics. The inhaler seems to help a little. I'm just curious if anyone else has ever had something like this. Is it bronchitis or something else?

Is it that enterovirus (sp?)?

This happens to me when a cold goes to my chest. The albuterol should help

My friend just dealt with something similar and it took her more than a week to get somewhat better

I had this from my allergies. Ended up starting singulair. It helps tremendously. My cough was so bad it woke me up in the middle of the night and sometimes I would cough until I threw up. My allergies aggravated my long silent asthma. It was terrible. yay for singulair.

I have had this happen on a couple occasions, really severe allergies and a nasty head cold that turned into bronchitis. The albuterol inhaler really helps.

Arent these the exact warning signs of that virus that is spreading across the US?

Albuterol. I had this last spring for the first time ever.

go to an ER if you arent getting better. You need the inhale, but also oral steroids.

I had something similar (though I never felt like I couldn't breathe - it was more like wheezing without any sort of panic) after colds in the past year. I went to an allergist for something else and she heard my wheezing and prescribed me Pulmicort, which fixed my situation. She told me that I may have a sensitivity and thus develop mild asthma when I get upper respiratory infections. So, in my case, I guess cold can trigger some mild form of asthma and I need the inhaled steroids to get everything under control. I took the Pulmicort twice a day for a week both times my colds morphed into this odd situation and was fine.

Same for me. I was diagnosed with asthma at 35, but it only flairs up if I get sick.

There's a cough like this going around. Our whole family got it, and we had more wheezing than normal. The cough also was pretty wet/productive, and lasted for about a month. In our DD, it only went away after she went on albuterol. Everyone else kicked it on their own.
