Arlington County Schools

So much attnetion is paid to MontCo schools - what about Arlington? We are considering moving to Arlington and are very interested in Key for its spanish immersion program. We don't know anyone at all with experience in the school, so please, any advice would be appreciated! We live in DC now and would move to either Woodley Park for Oyster (which we know a great deal about) or head on over to VA.

Thanks!

Our neighbors sent their kids there and were very happy. I know of one other family who was not as happy. Short version: the principal did not seem as outgoing and accessible as some other principals in Arlington. That said, I am sure she would be happy to meet with you even if you aren't living in Arlington yet.
Some schools offer Spanish classes as an extracurricular activity, so your children could learn a little even if you don't go to Key.

We're at Arlington's other Spanish immersion school, Claremont, and love the principal there, as well as the school. We met the Key Principal and weren't as impressed; other friends have had similar reactions. On the other hand, the school has a great reputation and we have acquaintances whose kids go there and love it so I'd say go for it. When we considered Claremont, we emailed the principal and she was delighted to meet with us (this was in advance of the kindergarten informational meeting that Arlington holds every January). I'd definitely email the principal to request a meeting - it'll help give you a better feel for the school.

Good luck!

Starting next week are the kindergarten Open Houses for parents who wish to transfer their kids to another school. This might be a great way for you to view these schools up close. Check out the APS website for dates and time and schools. Most are held on Tuesdays, however.
