We have a bunch of the 4 oz. Dr. Brown's bottles (plastic for day care). It is driving me crazy that they leak every single day, but I have heard/read people say theirs have never leaked. If you figured out how to get Dr. Brown's bottles to not leak, please share your secret!
Here's my process... maybe I'm doing something wrong: -Wash all parts in the dishwasher. -Dry parts on a drying rack on the counter (unless there's not enough time, then we use them wet - doesn't seem to make a difference). -Push the off-white piece into the blue piece so it fits tightly. -Pour the milk into the bottle only up to the 4 oz line and plop the blue+off-white piece into the bottle. -Put the white circle on top of the off-white thing. -Put the nipple into the screw cap, and screw it on to the bottle until it's tight. -Put on the top. If you don't know the secret to the Dr. Brown's bottles, what bottles do you use that don't leak? DD is almost 4 months... when will I need larger than 4 oz. bottles? She has only had breast milk (so far) if that makes any difference in bottle size. |
We screw the collar/nipple/cap on really really really tightly and that helps a lot. When traveling around, we use the stopper disc thing or we use the white Dr Brown's caps that I bought separately. For daycare, we just put the bottles, no discs, with tops (collar, nipple, cap) all assembled in an upright lunch bag and they actually don't leak.
We have occasionally had leaks, but it's usually when the collar wasn't screwed on super tight. Also I've had to call Dr. Brown's for other things (their warmer) and they have excellent customer service, so you could try that. You talk to an actual person who is an actual expert in their products. |
16:30 here - oh and I did buy 3 of the 8 oz dr brown's bottles but we've actually only used them for 4 oz bottles when we ran out of clean 4 oz bottles. My DD is 10 mos and she is still good with a 4 oz bottle and eats tons and tons of solids so I don't see that amount ever going up (I'm actually going to start sending 3.5 oz bottles next week for the first time and see how that goes). I do know plenty of BF babies who take 5 or 6 oz bottles but we never needed to go up. YMMV |
Does it go past the 4 ounce line once the blue and white tube combo is inserted? Do you have a bag where they stay relatively upright? |
I've never added the disc thing and never had a leak. Just the nipple, screw top, and the blue thing with the off white topper. |
Mine never leaked, but I always kept them upright. You could buy the regular caps and ask daycare to put the nipples on there instead of using the discs. |
Mine always leaked too. The only thing that helped is to make sure they were always upright. |
The only time they leaked for me was when I left the disc in while heating in warm water. You need to take the disc out before heating. |
+1. This is the only time a bottle leaked for us. We hand-washed everything - but I don't think that should make a difference. |
They will leak when you travel, unless they are straight upright. You need to use the little disk or a separate cap and bring the other parts.
But, if they are leaking from the collar while you are feeding, there is probably milk in the vent system (the "straw" part). There should be no milk in the straw part. If the collar is leaking, pop the baby off, hold the bottle upright, and unscrew the top just about all the way. Wait a moment and if you can, watch to see the milk drop out of the straw. Screw the lid on but NOT super super tight. It will leak again for another minute while it drains out but after that you won't have any more leakage from the collar as long as you keep the straw part clear. I learned this when my second kid was 6 months old. It could have save me sooooo much agita! |
