Ridiculous assignment

Forgive me while I vent: my 5th grade DC has an assignment to decorate two notebooks with stickers, pictures, etc. These decorated notebooks have actual due dates, which means I have to take DC out to Michael's after school to pick up said stickers, decorations, etc. Why is this even an assignment? How about some math, spelling, or grammar instruction? Honestly, I am disgusted.

They just want the books to get covered- they last longer that way. I had the same assignments in school in the dark ages of the 1970's. Don't you have a box of markers and a brown paper bag from the grocery store in your house? Voila.

If the kids spend time "decorating" the notebooks, they are more likely to take better care of the notebooks, and not misplace them. The teacher gave this assignment for a reason.

How about cutting pictures out of magazines, newspapers, or mailings? I doubt if you have to have stickers and doodads.

It helps to differentiate different subjects so that they're not doing social studies work in their writing for example.

Sounds like it's their notebooks, not the textbooks.

I can't believe people are defending this one. I'd feel the same way you do, op. Isn't this why notebooks come in different colors? I'd put a couple of stamps on and call it done, but that's me

My 3rd grader had to do the same thing. We didn't buy anything for it. Just used stuff around the house .

Next week's lesson is "Coloring within the lines: a metaphysical inquiry into the concepts of 'inside' and 'outside.'"

Just wait until they start assigning "posters". Posters are really annoying and I think people vent about them come spring.

If it makes you feel any better, I had to write a page essay about my 3rd grader. Parent homework, yeah.

There's always homeschooling....

We used colored duct tape on top of a composition book. She added a few photos/stickers and covered those with packing tape.

My impression was that it makes it more personal, and it's quicker when they're in a big stack to find yours.

Just use stuff you have at home.

When DD was in the fifth grade, my DD was marked down because of parental failure to do the HW assigned to parents. She ended up with a one because of that (while I was dealing with cancer).

PP, did you inform the school? We have unusual family issues that make it impossible for my kids to do certain assignments. The teachers always excuse my kids. I cannot imagine teachers being so cruel to your daughter.

I hated these types of assignments in es. There was so much cutting and pasting that it was ridiculous.
