would you get your hair dyed by a cosmetology student?

I need a touch up on my roots - they are grey. Instead of paying a large sum of money I am considering going to a cosmetology school to have it done. I am afraid though that they will do a bad job. I love my colorist but she is becoming extremely expensive every seven weeks. Bad idea or not?

Just color and no highlights? Perhaps. Highlights - no way. I've had "professionals" that I paid full price for do a bad job.

yes, I will need a few highlights as well. So all over color plus a few blonde highlights. Maybe I should just spend the money for my colorist. i know she will do a great job

I had color cut and highlights at Aveda. this was years ago. it took forever!!! I was there probably 4 hours. Everything looked ok, but the student was so slow that it took her a good 45 minutes to ust do th ehighlights, meaning the first pieces were ready to rinse out by the time she was done. I didnt go back because of this. i think a cut and color would be better and faster. They have instructors there so I don't think to omuch can go wriong and if it does - they can probably fix it.

If you just need to touch up the roots, look up Jessie James Decker on Youtube. She has a video on doing it at home using Revlon's Frost and Glow. I've been trying to find ways to cut down on my salon costs, I love having my hair colored and highlighted but dang it costs a fortune!

I color my own hair, so I would absolutely trust a cosmetology student.

No. Like a pp said, I've seen enough "professionals" who don't do the job well that I'd be too afraid.

As long as you have a Plan B in place in case things go wrong.

Yes, you will save some money, but you will also be there 3x as long.

You may have 1-2 different students working on your hair at the same time and they may get hair dye all over your clothes (happened to me!) so wear something old. Also, if they mess up the color, you can try to get it re-done for free, but you most likely will have to pony up for the cost of another bottle of hair dye.

For highlights that you want to look nice, I wouldn't risk it. Or if you have a special event coming up, I wouldn't take the chance.

But if you do not have anywhere to go for the next few days, then sure...Why not? I would take the chance...
