We have a toddler with some sensory issues and sleep difficulties so we have used regular blinds and blackout shades. Now that she is more mobile we want to get rid of the corded blinds and I have researched a lot but read such differing opinions, I wanted to check here to see exactly which option worked for you, name and model of the product and where you bought it from.
We don't care from a decorating perspective so it does not have to be pretty but should be easy on the eye. Also now that I am converting the room into a playroom, it should be something that allows light easily in the daytime and is really a good blackout option at night with no cords for safety purposes. I don't mind expensive options. I have read about cellular blinds, faux wood blinds, blackout Roller cordless blinds with no need for any other curtains (currently what I am leaning toward), plantation blinds, cotton blackout drapes from bed bath. My head is spinning and I am not very good at installing and DH works 60 hrs so hopefully it won't be a task on my to do list to find a handyman to get it done (though that won't be a bad thing as I have several other small tasks that need help). Suggestions appreciated. |
| We got true blackout rollup shades from Strosniders hardware. They are great and have held up for 10 years so far. |
| Love the pottery barn/pbk cordless blackout roman shades. Pretty easy to install, actually, although I had to mount them on the frame bc of our nonstandard windows. |
| We put blackout curtains in our kids bedrooms and they block out the light great! We had blackout cellular shades and they darkened the room but definitely not black out. Go on amazon and search "thermal blackout curtains." The grommet top one is great because they are very easy to open and close. They come in different lengths to fit your window. I find that if you mount them high & close to the ceiling, it will block out the light ever better. Same goes for making sure you extend wide beyond the width of the window. You can use on any kind of rod. bed bath has decent/cheap choices. Also we went with a dark color because a lot of the reviews comment that the dark ones block out light better. And the material is quite nice & not cheap looking. |
| Cellular blinds from Home Depot or lowes. Order online if you have standard sizes. We just got instore Home Depot cellular. Not a fan of the look but work great. Know you can go longer. We have the 72 inch on our 54 inch windows and it is fine. They have more lengths online. |
| Amazon has great ones in multiple colors. |
| We did a combo of blackout roller shades and black out shades. Our house had old windows and window frames so we had to mount inside the frame. This meant we still had sunlight peeping through the sides, conveniently shining right in DC's eyes. We used Home Depot roller shades and target blackout curtains. |
These are what we have as well. Love them! The Navy in DS's room keeps it really dark. I went with beige in our room and it's good, but not as good as the navy for mid-day sun (ie, nap time!). |
