No! Ethan Frome is nothing like Charlotte's Web. It's for a much older audience, involves a live triangle. Absolutely not appropriate for an elementary schooler, which is how old I would assume is they not OP is requesting recommendations for.

OP, I agree about Trumpet of the Swan and would add Stuart Little and a Cricket in Times Square. Maybe James and the Giant Peach.

+1. Why anyone would suggest Ethan Frome, which is a depressing adult novel by Edith Wharton, is beyond me (even though I loved it). Weird suggestion.

I love this list! So many of my childhood favorites on here, especially The Golden Goblet (higher reading level than Charlotte's Web but soooooo good! Also, Mara, Daughter of the Nile is in the same vein but more likely to appeal to girls)

Does he read with his one eye? Because books aren't gendered.

But some stories/books/characters typically appeal to one gender more than the other. For example, while I think they are wonderful, classic children's books, I know very few young boys enjoy reading Little Women or A Little Princess or American Girl books, and thus I would not list them when making recommendations specifically for a boy. The information is pertinent and useful, not sure why you're picking on it.

American Girl Books aren't "classics" no matter who's reading them.
