Chocolate milk substitute?

Anonymous
My son loves chocolate milk and I'm sure its because of the sugar content. What can I get to substitute? Does anyone know of Nesquick or Carnation breakfast powder is worth a try?

Have you tried simply mixing in a little Hershey's syrup into organic white milk?

Water. Get him off of it. Those powders are junk, too. Just sugar.

well . . . if you were willing to put in a lot of work, this might be the way to go: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2014/09/chocolate-and-toasted-hazelnut-milk/

Hershey's makes a lite syrup as well as sugar free. A few drops in organic white milk.

One point in favor of the powders -- you can gradually reduce the amount you use so that the additional sugar is negligible.

I still LOVE chocolate milk, but instead of 2tbs nesquik per 8oz milk (as the label suggests), I use 1-2 tsp/12 oz milk, which reduces the added sugar considerably.

Thanks for the suggestion!! I saw the Nesquick No Sugar but I was too skeptical to buy today.

We use the no sugar Nesquick and it tastes great. Hard to tell the difference from the full sugar kind. I order it cheap from Walmart.

We use Carnation breakfast, but we also have a slender kid who we are trying to bulk up a little per the doctors. I have tasted the stuff and it's good. But organic/natural, it's not. My kid loves the stuff.

How often do you give it to him? As long as it is infrequently don't worry. DS loves those horizon fat free organic milk boxes. He'll have one or 2 a week In fact he had one in his lunch today as a treat for eating all his lunch the rest of the week.

Personally I would prefer the sugar than the chemicals in sugar free options. I'd rather give him the real stuff on ocassion than the fake stuff more regularly.

But if chocolate milk is his thing then maybe that is just his daily treat. Even once a day a small serving of chocolate milk won't hurt him as long as long as you aren't allowing other treats.

They make straws that flavor the milk when you sip through them. A lot less sugar than actual chocolate milk. My kids love them as a treat.

Are you under the impression that far free milk is better for you and that sugar is ok? Read the study in the NYT from this week about how fat is actually not the culprit. Sugar is the problem. Finally this news is going mainstream.

Make your own with syrup so you can control the amount and slowly decrease chocolate to milk ratio

I drink a cup of chocolate milk a day. It won't kill your child or make him sick.
