Try this. Instead of the crushed spices, use half a tsp to a tsp of garam masala instead.

Garam masala is not used for rice. It is used for curries. You can try Biryani masala for rice.

Biryani masala is nice, but if garam masala is what you have it will work perfectly fine.

You could try something like a red lentil dal over rice, I always enjoy that. Chana masala like a pp suggested is also great.
