Is this true? My second grader, recently diagnosed with ADD and auditory processing disorder, is considered at or above grade level. Speech pathologist said the level of auditory processing disorder shows need for IEP, school disagrees since my kid is at or above grade level. At least the teacher indicated this to me (I gave the report to her and the school) - haven't had a formal meeting yet. Report listed 7-8 easy no-cost recommendations for helping my kid; I don't think they're even going to consider at this point. I know as soon as I say, "I want a meeting" then we have to proceed.
One week in, it's a struggle for my kid. Having a hard time with noisy classroom (almost 30 kids). My kid comes home exhausted. Considering private. Curious to know what public should really be doing, however, until we possibly go private - for our sake, as well as others out there. Makes no sense. thanks! |
| An iep isn't appropriate if she's at grade level, but a 504 plan is. You can get that with a disability that requires classroom modifications. And it's not law according to fcps, it's federal law |
| I have a child in FcPS who is on grade level with an iEp for all social/emotional deficits. |
| What services do you feel your child needs? If it's accommodations only, then look into a 504. |
It's the third day of school. And it was over 90 degrees out. ALL kids are exhausted. My third grader with no processing or learning or attention issues just put herself to bed at 7pm. On Tue and Wed, she fell asleep on the ride home. Give it another week. Then request the meeting is she is still struggling. |
If your child is performing below age or grade level, either academically, linguistically, or socially, you can make a case for an IEP. If your child is meeting age/grade expectations across the board it's harder to get one. |
It has been a long journey - I've known something was off since he was almost 2. The testing and the answers I'm finally getting have been long in coming. This is tears/meltdown kind of struggling. At grade level now, but I'm betting not long, given the effort last year was. There's no way you could know all this - ! thanks to all others who posted. Very helpful info. Guess we'll be going private; best of luck to everyone else. |
| Unfortunately even in private you are still at the mercy of the school to provide accommodations. |
Speech pathologist recommended speech as well as accommodations. I'd be happy with accommodations, planning to pay for private speech/language. |
does FFX county even measure this linguistically or socially? Bright kid, but I'd bet he doesn't meet grade level both linguistically and socially. |
| It is a harder road when they are making progress, but it doesn't mean it is not coming at a price. As they move up in grades, and there are more demands, so students break down. Kids that we watched at younger grades, are coded by 4th grade. But PPs are correct, if you just need accommodations now, and not specialized instruction, push for the 504. You come back later, if you feel your child needs more. |
yes. That's why I'm hiring an advocate/consultant. No guarantee there either, but it feels better than going in cold myself. |

It all depends on the school.
My first FCPS was not helpful. We moved into a better neighborhood by chance. It was like night and day. |
I suspected that. It's not doable within the year. Those better places are hard to ferret out too. If you're willing to share location, please let me know! Not sure how long we can swing private. I'm going to do everything I can though. |

Please do not leave FCPS.
We live in Little Rocky Run. Union Mill ES is a great school. Good luck! |
