We have 2 little frozen embryos left after my last IVF when I was 39. Now I'm 41. The best embryo led to my DD, but we're considering trying again. I really don't want to go through IVF again, but wonder if I have a real chance with either of our good (not great) embryos. One took 6 days to get to blast stage, the other 5 days. I would do SET twice because don't want even a tiny risk of twins if I can help it.
I worry that if I go ahead and try with these 2 and they don't work, I'll be so emotionally wrapped up in the idea of another child that I'll want to do IVF again and I'll get back on that roller coaster, which wasn't much fun the first time around. Any thoughts on chances now that I'm even older? |
| I can't speak to having luck but, I can tell you my experience. I had 4 blasts frozen and wanted to try for one more child. I was 35. My doc at GW MFA suggested going with another fresh cycle while I still had good OR and saving the blasts if that cycle failed. |

How are you determining "good not great" condition? Are they graded?
At my clinic frosties are the exception and not the norm--I'd go for an eSET in a second. |
| Everybody is different and you won't know until you try. GL! |
| I got a BFP with one day 5 blast. I assume a day 5 blast us good quality. Go for it and good luck. |
| Do you know the grade of the embryos? I am not sure slightly slower growing translates to not great quality. Ask you doc specifically for a grade. Yes, SG does grade embryos in case anyone tells you they do not, in case you are there. |
| Got pregnant with two blasts in not great condition (only one took, there weren't twins) but then had a miscarriage at 10 weeks. |
My thriving toddler twins are from good but not great 6 day blastocysts. It can definitely happen OP. (And my unsolicited advice would be to transfer one at a time!)
Good luck! |
| OP here: thanks! I think one was a B and one a C+. Good to hear there is a chance. Now we make the bigger decision...to go for it given our ages and concerns about the emotional toll of trying again. |

Got pregnant with 6 day blast- great condition but at day 5, they didn't even think they would freeze it. 25 year old donor egg. At age you froze, I would put back both and sounds like you may be done. I don't think I'd put back just 1. Age you froze is still advanced maternal age. If you were dead set on another baby, then consider a cycle to two for fresh--- utilizing last year of fertility. But since you are on fence-- I would transfer both and hope for the best! Good luck.
Also talk to your RE-- he should actually offer you good advice. |
| Have your embryos been genetically tested? If not, the chances of success are significantly less than if they are known to be genetically normal. If you really want another child, I would do another retrieval cycle now and keep your current embryos frozen just in case. At 41, every passing month counts. If you get pregnant with an embryo that is not genetically normal, you could lose months to CVS, amnio, miscarriage recovery, etc. Your fertility may decline dramatically during that time. |
