I want to plant a christmas-tree like tree

Anonymous
Would like it to be pretty big and/or fast growing.

What would work well in DC?

Eastern white pines get really big. They also tend to drop branches in ice storms and snow storms. They're beautiful trees, but I wouldn't plant one in my yard.

Pretty much all trees drop branches in ice storms. OP asked for a "big" tree.

I do want a tree that gets nice and big. Something not dead in winter for my yard.

Some more than others, though. Have you ever watched a white pine after a snowstorm with heavy, wet snow? It's an amazing sight, but not something to have near your house or power lines.

Not if you prune properly:

Removing too many under branches will cause almost any evergreen to collapse under heavy snows.
