William and Mary suicide yesterfay

I am so sad for him and his family. Rising senior. I cried all day yesterday. My younger son is a rising senior there. What went wrong?
Anonymous
So sad. Apparently, he was well-known on campus. Sounds like W&M was proactive in announcing that he had taken his own life. Back in the day, college suicides were swept under the rug.

Agree with 7:45 poster. They got the info out quickly and have services available to students. As the parent of two college boys, my heart breaks for his family.

Earlier this month (Aug. 4) a W&M rising senior died at his home in Lincoln, Neb. -- cause of death not disclosed.

Yep. Knew that. Sad. Manner of death not disclosed likely means suicide. So sad.

When wedding rings, tonsil stones, lacrosse teams and shoes are more important topics than a college student's suicide, it is finally clear to me what a vapid, loser crowd posts on DCUM. I have vowed to stop reading here, but this week has done it for me.

Come on, pp. You can't judge this by frequency of replies to a thread. What can be said about this topic? "wow, sucks"? Just because a topic is easier to talk about doesn't mean it's more important.

I've had suicides in my family and I'd rather not have it discussed among internet strangers.

I agree with 11:15. I read the thread but did not comment. My best friend committed suicide a few months ago and I would have been really upset if people posted here about it. Many times on threads like these, friends and family write in to request that others not post about it.

This is a truly tragic loss and my heart goes out to this young student's loved ones.

There are more than twice as many suicides each year in this country as homicides. People are so torn about what to do - talk about it more and unintentionally reinforce it, or talk about it more and get some much needed discussion going? We lived in a very upper middle class neighborhood in Fairfax, and had three (3) suicides of teens in as many years.

So unbelievably sad.

Thanks all. I understand your perspectives. I am still, thankfully, done. Enjoy DCUM. I am glad to go away, finally.

Our family has dealt with a suicide that was extremely hard on our teens. When I read about suicides of young people here, I have have lots of feelings, but usually don't respond. Doesn't mean it isn't important.

Well, I'm glad that OP posted because I have one in college and another going in a few years. This is a reminder that the pressure in our high schools and colleges is extreme. Our message to our kids should be that nothing is so bad to do this, depression notwithstanding, and that they should always feel free to seek help.

suicide rates are up. voluntary assisted suicide (a la for terminally ill in switzerland) are also up.

It is going to get worse.
