Help me decide on a new dishwasher

Anonymous
We want to buy a mid-range unit that has food disposal built in and with controls that are easy to use. Every model we look at has reviews that make me nervous about committing one way or the other. We're considering these two units. Anyone have experience with them or who has bought one within the past 6-12 months that they like? We're also considering the Kenmore Elite line from Sears, but the newest models have no reviews. TIA

food disposer is over-rated

Why is that? OUr current model gets gunk all clogged up in it, it never drains, it smells, etc. I have to clean it out by hand (yuck) and run it with a capful of bleach every month or so to get rid of the smell and the mildew that builds up around the dispensers, etc. From what I've read the disposer helps to deal with the clogging/standing water issue.

Just bought that Samsung dishwasher and absolutely love it. I got it for about $450 though during the 4th of July sale at Lowes. It cleans great, drains great and is awesome.

My only complaint is that there isn't a "no heated dry" option. I use a lot of plastic Tupperware and don't like heated dry normally. Haven't noticed any of my stuff getting melted though like it did previously with other dishwashers.

Also, it took my DH 1/2 hour to install. If you or your DH is somewhat handy, no need to pay for install.

you want heated dry for plastic, that'd the major issue with bosche. The best dishwasher is kitchen aide with disposer.

I bought a samsung last year and it's been nothing but trouble. I would go whirlpool. I will never again buy a samsung.

Argh! Not mad at you but this is exactly why I can't make this decision. Reviews of these things are all over the place!!

Why didn't you like the Samsung? The reviews said the electronic controls fritz out a lot. . .makes me nervous.

I like Whirlpool as far as basic appliances go, but my Whirlpool dishwashers only ever last five years. After that some part needs to be replaced and it almost always ends up cheaper to replace the whole thing than the part.

In recent years, I have had both Bosch and Meile dishwashers. I really like both. I prefer the Miele. I was worried about having to clean the filter. It's so easy. I only do it about every three months or so (the light goes on and tells me to clean it). It takes about two minutes just rinsing it in the sink.

We have a Kitchen Aid (about 1 year old) which we like. One feature I would look for (it is on a variety of models) are jets in the back of dishwasher that you can use to focus one one pan facing backwards. Think lasagne pan. It works wonderfully.

We have similar and are happy with it. It's very quiet. Dishes get clean. We don't use the heated dry because it makes me nervous (neighbor in TX lost their house to a fire). We often run the dishwasher when we are asleep since someone is always doing something with the water. The only thing I don't like is that it smells bad. I haven't looked into how to fix that, though, honestly. I don't know if it would be in your mid-range sub-$400 price point, though. I think we paid somewhere between $800 and $950.

My samsung was purchased in 2013 and so far we've had Best Buy out twice to fix it. And I have to call them again this week to return for more repairs. Either we got a lemon or else the brand is no good.

Mid-range to me is anywhere from 500-800 or so. The Whirlpool is on sale. I just don't know, though. . .it seems like EVERY brand I read about has issues after a few years, almost as though they are designed for planned obsolescence. It makes me hesitant to sink a ton of cash on ANY dishwasher.
