Help with DC Public elementary schools--Especially Stevens and Hyde

Anonymous
We are seriously considering buying a place in DC. We are right on the edge of the Hyde Elementary boundry, but do fall in the Stevens boundry. I was hoping not have to pay for private school at the elementary level. Does anyone know anything about Stevens and if my daughter would get a good education there? I am also wondering if anyone is familiar with the lottery process of getting into Hyde, which appears to be the better school from what I can read online.

OP--It appears that Hyde has no transfer openings for SY 2008-2009, so my question really becomes does anyone know if we would be okay in sending our daughter to Stevens for her elementary education?

Stevens sucks - they are closing it down and combining it with Francis schools which goes through 8th grade. Hyde I believe is largely an out of boundary school, and they have parent interviews. I hear good things about it though

you can look on the dc public schools website for test scores for schools

Your daughter would likely not get the best education there. It has a poor reputation even among teachers at other DC public elementary schools. I'd look into out of boundary options, hopefully it's not for next year?

OP--No, it is not for next year. She actually will not be entering Kindergarten until the fall of 2010, but from what I have been able to tell, you cannot start looking into the Kindergarten schools too early, and I do not know if we want to buy in an area where we will be forced to send her to private school. We are also looking at Arlington and Bethesda, but wanted to be in the city if possible and not have to move again in the next couple years.

I understand it's hard not having a guarantee, but out of boundary schools really are a good possibility. I understand the desire to stay in the city for certain, and most people I know (though perhaps this is atypical? I don't know?) who have applied out of boundary have gotten into at least one of their options. Good luck either way.

One of the posters above, said that there were no transfer spots for Hyde for the SY 2008-2009. Can you tell me how you know that so far in advance?

Thanks!

I may be misreading this, but it came off the dc public school website.
