I have found the key to keeping food hot in a thermos is to heat up the thermos before putting the food inside. It's easy - just fill it with hot water and put the lid on. Let it sit while you prepare the food. Empty the water, dry it out and add the hot food. Hot food put in a cold thermos will not stay warm for long.

I also do this and my son says his food is still warm. Of course I got the tip from DCUM.

This as well. You can also use it as a test to see how long it keeps things warm. Put the hot water in for about 30 minutes, dump out, pour new hot water in and seal. Check in 5 hours to see how warm it is and you'll get a good idea if it'll stay warm. Food does tend to hold onto heat longer though, so if it's not quite warm there's still a good chance the food would be warm.

+2 Also, I have found that if food is cooked (or reheated) on the stove vs in the microwave, it tends to stay warmer longer. Anything that I need to put food in thermos for DD I either cook that morning or warm it on the stove.
