Yu Ying special ed

At the end of the school year some posted about the turnover at Yu Ying. I know there is a new SPED coordinator. Does anyone have additional info to share? Thanks!

Thanks! But Yu Ying posts go bonkers there so I would rather keep it over here and I know there are other posters here who are at the school.

Have not heard anything but the school is in the middle of construction. I wish they would let us know who is my child's case manager since the bilingual SP Ed teacher who was, left. I am really hoping they find more mandarin speaking staff too.

Guess we'll find out soon enough...

Thanks! That person was not our case manager but I am eager to find out as well. I know these positions are difficult to fill. Trying to remain optimistic.

I'm trying to stay optimistic too. The SpEd coordinator who left use to be my child's case manager before being promoted. I was very very sorry to see so many people leave. The VP was really great too and my child adored her as well as the SpEd coordinator and his case manager.

However, I am very pleased with his classroom teachers for the coming year so that helps.

That's impressive that Yu Ying had a bilingual special ed teacher.. We're in NoVA and immersion programs here do not have bilingual special ed teachers to work on language arts issues...

Yes, she will be sorely missed since her presence in the classroom made it two teachers instead of one. Only Mandarin is allowed in the Chinese classrooms so she was the only SpEd teacher who could provide in class support during Chinese days.

My child has no academic issues, he is above grade level across the board, and his IEP does not address academics but he needs help with issues like starting a task and packing up... not sure how the school is going to fulfill his ~20 hrs SpEd support without her.

I am OP. Was that special ed teacher the only bilingual one at the school? We did not have that kind of support in our class. Different grade. Would certainly be nice!

Do you know how she was assigned to your particular grade and class?

I *think* she is/was the only SpEd teacher who spoke Mandarin.

I'm not sure how she was assigned to our class/grade other than that our class is full of "trouble making parents." Seriously, I think it was b/c we had so many issues with getting a K lead Chinese teacher. We're the class/grade that went through 5 Chinese lead teachers due to the assigned K Chinese lead teacher quitting a week before school started and we have a lot of kids with IEPs and 504s due to the sheer number of kids in the jumbo class.

Got it. I heard about that trouble with staffing one of the K classes in the jumbo class. Sounded awful! Guess you guys deserved it!

They only started doing IEPs with Chinese learning goals within the last year or two so they probably staffed based on which grade had the highest concentration of needs. But I do believe that there will be another Chinese special ed teacher this year

That is great! Did you hear this from the school directly?

Not that bad. What ended up happening in K was that the two classes that were affected ended up with 3 teachers, lead teacher (who kept getting replaced), assistant, and Sp Ed teacher so it was 18 and 17 kids with 3 teachers in the Chinese K classroom. Can't complain about that

The Assistant teacher eventually took over as the lead (with a new Assistant) in K and later the lead teacher moved up with the class to first grade as did the bilingual Sp Ed teacher so some kids had the same teachers for K and 1st which was also nice.

Yu Ying's been great overall for their Sp Ed services.

That's great news that there will be another Chinese sp ed teacher!

The Sp Ed coordinator who left was reluctant to put Chinese learning goals during our IEP meeting this past Spring. Amazing what I learn on DCUM... Guess I will ask again
