First time at Indian restaurant

Never had indian food but a new place just opened and I'm intrigued by the great reviews. What's a good first dish to try??

Butter chicken or chicken makhani
If you are vegetarian, something like mutter paneer or aloo makhani

Chicken biryani (chicken & rice), dishes with saag (spinach). Tandoori chicken. Chole (chickpeas). Daal (lentils)

And get some naan.

Agree with this. Also saag paneer.

Many Indian places do a lunch buffet. That might be a good way to try a few things and get a feel for what you like. If that's not an option, some places offer a thali plate-which is usually rice with small servings of 4 or 5 different dishes.

Aloo gobi is always my favourite ( cauliflower and potatoes). Plain biryani rice is super tasty. And I totally second the saag. Saag paneer (spinach and paneer, which is a fresh cheese) is delicious.

For people who don't usually eat Indian, paneer, butter chicken, and a mild curry are the safest bets. Naan is a must. Papadums are another type of flatbread made with chickpeas, is delicious as well.

Paneer tikka masala or chicken tikka masala. Or butter chicken. Garlic naan. And you must get samosas!!! I never met a person who doesn't love samosas. Enjoy OP!

Chicken tikka is one of the safest in terms of flavor. You might want to start there if you aren't too sure of spicy food, etc.

I think papadum are a bit bitter and not necessarily good for beginners. Naan is much more beginner-friendly. It comes plain or with garlic or onion.

I agree with everything else here. I'm getting hungry.

The health dept reviews are always really crappy for indian restaurants so I stay away.
