Talk to me about paint

Anonymous
I had a friend vaguely suggest to me that it's more economical to paint with Benjamin Moore than with other brands because it typically requires only one coat. So I think, OK, I'll go find some BM paint and use that. So of course it turns out there are all different kinds of finish, there's primer, etc. I don't really understand the distinction between matte / satin /semi-gloss / eggshell. Is there a rule of thumb when it comes to which kind of finish you use in which room (I'm talking about interior paining)? Is my friend right about it taking only one coat or is that wishful thinking?

Pishaw pishaw. I have used, with great success, the Behr Premium Plus. It's about $32-$34/gallon depending on flat/eggshell/etc. I've also used Ben Moore, at over $50/gallon. I saw NO difference. You need 2 coats either way. Behr can be mixed in any competitors color. I usually use BM or SW colors and Behr paint.

I normally do flat for ceilings, eggshell for interior walls and semi gloss for doors, trim and furniture.

This is the rule of thumb.

When I used Ben Moore, it ended up needing two coats of white to completely cover the light beige underneath. I also used two coats and no primer with the Home Depot brand. I used the low-VOC (i.e., stinky chemicals) varieties of both brands, and BM stopped smelling after a week, but the Home Depot took at least 2 months to stop smelling. So I'll use BM again.

Same here except I've used satin or enamel for furniture. Behr Premium Plus is amazing and really, all paint will require 2 coats unless you're an expert in loading your paint roller/brush to get sufficient coverage the first time. Most of us run the rollers over the walls too much which means not enough paint is saturating the wall; however you don't want to overload your roller and drip so most people are better off doing two coats.

I've painted with open doors/windows and circulating fan to help dissipate odor; I don't have any problems with Behr regarding lingering odors. Spend your money on good paint brushes and rollers; properly prep your walls and do your cut ins well.

Tried them all and this is my favorite. Use a primer if the walls are bad or changing colors drastically.

I would not do eggshell for walls. In my experience, it's hard to paint over eggshell unless it is primed first. Otherwise it may run.

Our house, we did:
Extra Flat for ceiling,
Flat for walls and
Satin for trim and doors.

For paint color, remember that a little color goes a long way. Buy a small sample for $3 and paint it on a oversized sheet of paper... like office flit chart or Ikea kids drawing paper roll. tape it to the wall and see how it looks during day/night.

My handyman would only use Sherwin Williams. I just had a dedicated painter in and he liked Sherwin Williams and BM equally.

Builder here. I will never use Behr paints. Had a client insist I use them. It was actually a transparent stain. Bubbled in the heat which is a no-no. Not an application error. Complete pain in the ass. Would never risk using it again.

I had painter talk me into flat walls. Mistake - it was easier for him. Should have insisted on Eggshell. Can't clean flat paint.

Of course you can clean flat paint, after all it is latex. Magic Eraser works great!

No I hate flat paint on walls. SO hard to clean. I like a good eggshell. Flat paint just looks dull to me.
