What time to go south on 95 this Saturday?

Anonymous
Going to a relatives birthday party in Fredericksburg, starts at 2pm. Same event, same time, 2 years ago, maybe on a Sunday, but def weekend, took us nearly 4 hours to get to

I guessing we need to leave early and find a place to hang out until the party, but how early.

Where would you go infredericksburg with a 2 and 4 year old if you had a few hours to kill?

Seriously, only a wedding would get me to Fredericksburg on a Saturday in the summer. The traffic on 95 is a shit storm no matter what time you leave. Can't you come down with an illness the morning of this party?

Can you take the train instead? Actual question.

The traffic south on 95 is a true shit storm to quote PP. The train or alternate route sounds like a better option.

With all of the construction, I don't think there is a good time.

I would kill time in downtown Fredericksburg. There are shops, kid friendly restaurants, and parks to run around in.

95 really is awful. I think you'd have to leave before 10:00 and even that is still probably bad. You can try Rt. 1 but it gets backed up as well.

OMG. I would leave at 4am and find something to do until the party. Seriously.

I dont think that is early enough either. 2:30-3am is more like it

It's been a few years since I headed down that way (had family there and once lived there) but I found that getting on the road before 10am worked okay. So probably to be safe, I would leave at 9 am.

When I lived there and my kid was small, I used to take her over to walk around the campus at Mary Washington U. There was a fountain there that she just loved. (Lame, I know, but little kids are fascinated by such simple things.)

Also, Carl's Ice Cream, an old-fashioned soft serve place is a local institution. http://www.hollyeats.com/Carls.htm You might also check out Sammy T's for lunch. Laid back easy going place. http://www.sammyts.com/ And I believe that Goolrick's, an old fashioned soda fountain is still going strong: http://www.yelp.com/biz/goolricks-modern-pharmacy-drugs-fredericksburg

Oh and you can stop by the library and look at some picture books. http://www.librarypoint.org/

I'm sure there's a lot more there for kids to do now but it's been a long time since I've been there. It was tough living there for a number of reasons but there were many aspects of Fburg I just loved.

Pp again. There's also a small play ground in Kenmore Park on the corner of Kenmore Ave and Mary Ball Street. I just checked street view in Google and it appears to still be there.

Can you take Route 17 instead?

Out of curiosity, is 95 S any more bearable on a Friday morning? And if so, at what times?

Just did it this morning, leaving DC around 8:15am. Traffic wasn't a problem.

Guess it depends on when you leave. Took us 4.5 hrs. It was horrible.

Thursday at 4 95S crawled from Beltway to Fredericksburg. Today around 2, 95N and S has loooong stretches of below speed traffic.
