New to AAP 4th grade

DC got into AAP this yr. Rising 4th grader.

If 3rd grade AAP class has already covered 4th, should I teach that over summer?

No. If your kid belongs in AAP they should have no problem catching on quickly.

My kid moved here in 4th grade.

Most of the stuff was easy.

The main issues that my kid dealt with were:

1) Not being the only top kid in the class (This was good and also an adjustment since the kid was previously used to no effort to be way above the rest of the class. It took a while for my kid to realize that she/he would not be whizzing through the work and reading independently or daydreaming the entire school day)

2) Caesar's English. This was a struggle mostly due to the fact that the kid had to catch up a year's worth of vocab and the kid was not used to anything even remotely resembling studying.

3) Organization. In spite of there being a rather large contingent of absent minded professor types, the hard chargers in AAP really have their shit together. It took a full year for my kid to wrap his/her mind around the need to be organized to be competitive. This was never necessary at the old school.

As long as your child picks up quickly and has some semblance of study and organizational skills, he should be just fine.

Thank you for the detailed response.

My concerns were Math and reading. You addressed reading. How about Math? Did you cover any additional material over summer?

Math ... if your kid was in compacted math, there should be no difference. If not, work with the school.

DC is also joining AAP in 4th grade, I bought a Spectrum 4th grade math book from book store and we've been working on it during the summer. They will be fine.

PP here, I just remembered that the school told us that we could borrow math and language arts book for the kids to work on during the summer.

I guess it is too late for that now. But I could try spectrum books though. Thanks

It might not be too late, I called DC's school today, they said they'll call me when they are ready for pick up.
