Best Company to Replace Windows

Anonymous
I need every window in my new co-op replaced.

I will need financing because this was not allocated in my budget. I can pay it off with my bonus, but I want them done before I move in. Someone that also knows about lead and isn't going to have lead leaking all over my house!

Any thoughts on this?

Windows are expensive. We ended up getting vinyl windows from Thompson Creek (vinyl is a lot cheaper than wood, some people say it's inferior but four years later we don't have any complaints). But you should get multiple estimates and negotiate to get the best deal. We also got estimates from Renewal by Andersen and Marvin.

I had to replace windows that were getting condensation between the two panes. I found out that you can replace the whole window (Anderson, Thompson Creek, etc.), but in some circumstances you can replace the glass only. So it depends on what the problem is. You might get a replacement window place and a glass place (Campbell Glass, for example) to do bids and also get their opinions about what your options.

Don't know who the best company is, but I would recommend against Thompson Creek. Their salespeople were overly pushy and were the highest priced out of the three bids we got.

Window salesmen are the worst. Definitely stay away from Long Windows. They were horrible.

How old is the building, and what are the issues with the windows? Are they the same age as the building?

Also - how long do you anticipate staying there?

You need to talk to your co-op board to see who makes the windows you need. They will definitely need to look a certain way from the outside.

True - especially if visible from the street. Also, are you in a historic district?

Just had vinyl replacment windows installed by "Windows on Washington" out of Chantilly. Company came highly recommended by co-workers, and they sell Okna brand windows which seem to be well reviewed. Also spoke with "Hodges Windows" out of Falls Church. We also liked them, but the personal recommendations by the co-workers swayed us. Install went quickly and smoothly and the windows seem to be working well.

Don't waste your time with Thompson Creek. I cannot stress enough, do not waste your time with Thompson Creek. They'll come in with their pitch, take up a ton of time, tell you that you and your spouse need to be there, and give you a hard sell with a ridiculously high price -- unless you buy today, today, TODAY, at which point they apparently reduce the price by some arbitrary large percentage. It was so painful to deal with that they could have the best product in the US and I wouldn't buy a single pane of glass from them.

Thompson creek are ridiculous. We bought vinyl (soft-lite imperial pro) windows from "the window man" in 2010 and have been happy with them. Installed price was around 500/window.
