Discussing owning chickens

I was having a conversation about having chickens at home (more conceptual than anything). Co-worker and I could not figure out if you need a rooster in the hen house (hee-hee!). I always assumed I'd just have chickens, but is that not right? I feel like I never took sex-ed, or something, but I wouldn't think I'd want a rooster with all the noise, but is the rooster necessary for me to get my fresh eggs?

The chickens need to be "freshened" by the rooster every two weeks or so. The rooster doesn't have to be there all the time.

| Really every 2 weeks? I am not sure about that. My friend has chickens and she definitely doesn't have a rooster. I didn't here her mention anything about a rooster paying a a visit every other week. |

| I have 8 hens - no rooster. A rooster is not necessary unless you want fertile eggs to hatch. FWIW I live out in the "country" near Middleburg. Roosters can also be useful as guards for the hens (their much more observant regarding predators); however their personalities are all over the board (some can be aggressive) and then there is the whole morning wake up call... |

My aunt has only two hens and gets eggs sometimes. Perhaps they need to have "met" the rooster. Same principle as milk cows in the past needing to have a first calf before producing milk - although maybe now it's all done with hormones! |

Focus people. If you have no actual knowledge, your best guess isn't all that helpful...
Without a rooster the eggs won't develop or hatch. You will still get eggs with just hens. Before considering it, keep in mind that chickens do vey little other than crap everywhere. We have two and I almost hate them enough to eat them. Almost. |

Can you use their poop for fertilizer? Think it's very rich in nutrients. |

| No rooster needed for eggs. Chickens also stop producing as frequently after a while so as they age, they go down from one daily to maybe five a week, etc |
