Any Thomson families out there?

Anonymous
I think I posted this on the wrong forum first so trying again. . .

There seems to be so little on DCUMs from families whose children have actually attended Thomson (or are still there). Is there anyone out there willing to share their experience?

I am particularly interested in hearing about PS3/PK4 experiences.

One area of concern-- will my child feel isolated because she doesn't speak Spanish? (I read one post that said something about this and wondered if there are any other non-Spanish speakers who have feedback on that issue)

Overall though, any personal experiences/feedback would be helpful!

I think Thomson actually has a lot of Chinese speakers.

Seriously, the school is about 20% Asian-American, & most of those are kids are of Chinese ancestry. At one point they offered Mandarin language instruction, although there's been some admin turnover & I don't know if they still do.

The Asian-American kids don't appear to stay in the later grades (older than 3rd grade)

I don't think this true. I toured the school during school hours and there were tons of asian kids in the older grades.

Hm I also toured during school hours and didn't see many Asian kids in the older grades. Could have just been a fluke.

I put Thomson as a Top 5 and it appears their waitlist has moved less than 10 places for Pk3. If you are waffling, move on and open spaces for the rest of us.

+1

All the Chinese families from my neighborhood go there vs. our inbound school because there is such support for Chinese ELL. Not sure why the eye roll, but that poster obviously is clueless.

Okay, this post got seriously derailed. No feedback for the original poster I guess?

OP, I would suggest you post on Penn Quarter Parents or Kids in the Triangle, you would get more information from parents who live downtown.

I doubt that any Thomson parents are regulars on this forum, which makes the gains in academic achievement at Thomson all the more impressive.

Your doubt makes it impressive?
