schools with good PK3-K programs with decent odds of getting in without a preference?

Ideally near-ish the Fort Totten metro or close to a red, yellow, or green line metro stop. I'm looking for a few potential "safeties" besides our in-bound to check out further in preparation for next year's lottery for PK3. These schools can currently be not-very-good in the rest of their grades. By a good early childhood ed program, I want a program that ensures that students feel safe, that the teachers care about them, and that encourages a love of learning. I'm not committed or against any particular educational approach because I think that many of them can be done well or badly.

It would be great if you can post what you liked about your experience, and any potential drawbacks to that school. Thanks!

Sela? Takoma? To be honest most DCPS do PS3 and PK4 well. Appletree has an excellent pre school program and isn't that hard to get in to (depending on campus), though it's not close to Fort Totten.

Um, thanks for playing, but Sela has not offered PS3. We'll see if that changes or if they're still operating after next year.

We're starting PS-3 at Bethune this year. I'll let you know how it goes! Big, beautiful new playground. The teachers I've met have been lovely and engaged. And I really like the other families we've met - most are from the immediate neighborhood - and my only complaint so far is that it's taken a while for the school to get information to us this summer. I think they've had a surge of interest, though, so I can't completely fault them for being a little behind the curve. Hoping it works well!

Thanks. The location would definitely work well for us, and we're planning to learn more about the school.

Don't be such a bitch. I was trying to be helpful. If you are going to be dismissive of genuine attempts to help you then just f off and do your research like the rest of us.

PP, maybe the reply to which you're responding doesn't belong to OP.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with PK3, PK4, or K in any of the above-mentioned schools or any other schools and would like to provide a little more detail about what you liked about them? Thanks!

That's our HRCS school as well, not just Bethune. We did the summer program at Bethune one year and loved it.

Our DD is going to Seaton this year for PK3. When we visited the school, we saw the things that you have mentioned above. It is a nice little community and the students seem happy. The staff is very helpful and supportive. The school is still not where it wants to be score-wise but I think that is going to change in the coming years. It may not popular (yet) on DCUM but had we not visited the school, got first hand info and saw the school for ourselves, we wouldn't have considered it. I highly suggest you give it a visit. I'd be the first one to say the bulding looks ugly from the outside but the interior is nice. There are plans of doing work on the exterior windows so they don't look like a prison . Also, it is across the street from the Shaw metro.

If you want a real safety school you can be sure to get into, add Imagine Hope Lamond. We visited their PK3 classes, and felt much better about it than anything you'd read on these boards. The teachers and administrators were both warm, and the kids were well behaved.

Bethune is great for early childhood. Highly recommend it

Is your interest in the school beyond PK? Or are you just looking for free daycare?
I'm all for OOB parents joining our school, but not particularly interested in bringing in people who aren't interested in truly growing the school.

Did you visit during the 2013-2014 school-year?
