US News uses a methodology that takes many factors into account, but this listing of the schools in the National Universities ranking category with highest academic reputation rankings may be more in line with common perceptions:

| Oh goodie! Another thread about rankings! |
|
I agree...another list. The embedded by PP of course is only national universities. What happened to the SLACs? I guess they've been cast aside since many don't rise to the "prestige" level of those noted in the list?
Oh well, someone will come along and make a list for them (e.g., US news no doubt...maybe its already out there and I just haven't bothered to waste my time looking for it!) |
| Wow..so UVa and UNC appear on this list, but UMd doesn't?! |
| I actually think we need more lists so that colleges and uni's stop trying to game the US News one and start putting their $$ into focusing on undergrad teaching and keeping costs down. |

UVa and UNC (Chapel Hill, at any rate) have long had better academic reps than UMd. |
makes sense to me. What's the problem? |
+1. As much as I am fond of UMd. UVA and UNC have much more of a national reputation. |
Agreed. I have a child there and think UMd is a great school, but 10 years ago its reputation wasn't anywhere near what it is today. |
A SLAC is not a university. Not even close. |
