I am trying to come up with a budget as I currently spend too much.
I have a spouse and two teen bits aged 15 and 13. What would be appropriate for a total clothing budget including shoes and jackets for the four of us? What do you spend? Currently I average 300-400 a month and I don't even feel we dress that well. |
| I don't purchase clothes every month. It's 2500 - 3000 for all of us for the year. |
|
We do 2nd hand store shopping for things other than undergarments and only shop for what we really need. So far this year we are about $450. So I guess we might average $50-$100 a month for a family of 4.
BTW-we dress well. |
I should clarify. We dress well but not following the newest fads. I spend 200-300 if I need a dress for a wedding. Kids shoes are between 60-80. I just mean I am not a high fashion type person. Not a fashionista. |
I don't shop monthly either, that's just the average. Some months more, some less. |
| Why do adults need new jackets every year? |
Adults don't. I never said we did. I asked what an appropriate budget would be including shoes and coats for the family. I never said we get a new jacket annually. |
| To start with just cut your clothing budget in half and work within it. You'll figure it out from there. |
| I'm guessing we spend no more than $1000 for a family of 4. My kids are young and get most of their clothes as presents, and we don't shop that often. The expensive stuff are their shoes, coats, and my occasional mk bag. |
Per month or year? |
| Way too much. |
Per year. |
| Wow, do none of you need to buy work clothes? My husband bought a new suit this year; there goes $800. That is not an every-year event but even regular work things could easily be $1000 over the course of a year. And that doesn't even include kids' clothes. Or my work clothes! |
I totally agree. When my dh buys shoes and a suit and two dress shirts it's a 1000 dollars. I don't know how you could possibly spend 1000/yr. especially with growing kids. |
I agree as well. I am very skeptical of the figures being quoted. We are a dual-working parent household (who work in very professional environments that require suits on most days) and have two growing boys - we spend a LOT on clothes/shoes/coats/hose/bags/underwear/swimsuits/socks/ties/accessories such as scarves, gloves, sunglasses, etc. every year. I do not think I have ever actually run the numbers but we probably spend around $600-$800/month on clothes (we usually do big shopping trips around 4 times a year so this is an average number), and I do not think we are particularly high rollers - we try to buy quality items on sale and at outlets in most cases. |
