| My 2.75 year old DD is always saying everything is too loud and covering her ears. Some times the things are actually loud (the super high powered hand dyers) and sometimes they are not (regular hand dryers) but she just seems very sensitive to sounds. Busy restaurants, vacuum cleaners, auto flushing toilets etc. Today we went to the $1 movies at Regal and she kept her ears covered nearly the whole time (she didn't do this when we saw Frozen but perhaps today's movie had more action sequences and therefore more noise?). Anyway, is this normal??? I've asked the pediatrician and he seems unconcerned but it seems excessive to me. I don't think she has a "sensory issue" per se but i'm a little concerned. She is otherwise social, bright and friendly. |

Did the pediatrician check her ears or did you just call?
Get a second opinion. Sorry, but most doctors aren't worth anything. In my experience, most are too scared to diagnose an illness or they go to the other extreme and scare you into thinking you have an issue, so they can medicate you. |
| As in a hearing test or just looked into? She has had her ears checked numerous times over the past few months including last week as she just got over pnuemonia - her sensitivity has been going on for quite a long time |
| Fwiw, I find movies to be way too loud for me, too. |
|
My son is just about the same age and started doing this also. He is also finding a lot of things scary.
I think it's a stage. |
| I think it's a stage too. My son went through that at around 3 yo, but doesn't do it anymore. |
| my 3yo DS has developed a serious aversion to anything loud(ish) and startling -- automatic flush toilets and hand dryers are particular culprits, which is making potty training lots of fun away from home. Motorcylces have also been declared too loud, though surprisingly fire trucks are still beloved. |
| my 2 year old DS does this. I think it's just a phase because he started doing this only a month ago, and loves making loud sounds. I read that it's pretty common for kids this age to do this and/or become afraid of the dark. Good luck. |
| My son has always been that way. I just carry earplugs in my purse for him. |
| OP here I seriously hope its a stage! She's also been saying she is scared a lot more and talking about monsters in her cubby and things. I hope she gets over it soon. |

+1. Did not bring my kid to the movie theater until 4-5 in part bcs the noise was too much for him |
| My 2.5 yo is the same way. He closes himself in his bedroom whenever I run the vacuum and hates public bathrooms. He will ask me to put the music on really loud, but seems to be bothered by the loud things that he cant control- automatic flushers, hand driers, vacuum cleaner. Also now scared of the dark and of monsters. |
lol, mine too! We got him some noise cancelling ear muff things a while back for him to wear at Monster Jam, and now he will also wear them when I vacuum, or when something is "too loud". |
My DD did this too. Now at 7 its just about gone. SHe has other sensitivities to things like clothing- preferring only knit garments. That too is evolving. Its really totally normal. We get desensitized to loud noises over time. My daughter still cant deal with those electric handdryers in public bathrooms, though. Especially the Dysons! |
